Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
A bad situation is always a difficult place to be in. The following will describe both sides of the argument where some believe you should try and improve your position and others believe you need to 'let things be'. It will also show that I strongly believe it is always better to strive for more, and try to create a better life for yourself and any family you may have.
Firstly, looking from the viewpoint of accepting bad circumstances, an idea I find deplorable, it is believed by a few that this kind of situation cannot be changed. In the examples given in the question of a lack of money or a job that is disliked, some people can feel that they are happy with where they are, and may be not confident enough to pursue more.
Moving on to the other side of the argument, where people, as I do, feel that when one has a situation that is unbearable he/she should act and, where they can, improve the situation. A good example of this is where I realized, too late, that the invitation for the interview tests hadn't been received as my email account couldn't receive emails. This was a disaster, as the tests for the jobs had since been completed for the year and I was unable to re-sit them. I wouldn't accept this lying down, and through a bit of luck and some hard work I managed to find a good internship with the prospects of employment and a good salary.
In conclusion then, simply accepting a situation is defeatist and i will never believe that things 'simply happen', but are created by dedication, persistence, hard work and a little luck.
Life is not always fair; sometimes people grind themselves in bad situations, such as having undesirable jobs or being financially poorer than they would like to be. It is argued by some people that we should simply accept bad situations as a natural state of affairs, while others are in favour of working hard to improve our negative circumstances. Both sides have their valid arguments, but I side more with the latter than the former.
In the modern age, humanity enjoys the greatest level of social and economic mobility in the history of our species. Once, it may have been nearly impossible for individuals to better their lives however hard they worked; an indentured farmer in medieval Europe would have no way of ever being anything other than a poor farmer, by virtue of his birth and lack of education. However, nowadays it has been proven that people from all backgrounds can become incredibly successful simply by trying hard to change their situation. Perhaps the most striking examples can be seen in the large number of self-made millionaires in developing countries who started out as dirt-poor farmers.
Nonetheless, it can still be said that many people find themselves in bad circumstances through no fault of their own. Whether by some cruel twist of fate or their place of birth, it is undeniable that some people are better off accepting their lot in life. This could be said especially for people that placed themselves in unfortunate situations through bad choices, like those who do not find a reasonable career because they have chosen to drop out of school, or criminals for instance. Yet even in these cases it is not unheard of for people to try to make their life better. There are numerous instances of dropouts who study hard to obtain academic degrees and secure gainful employment. There are also many examples of former gangsters reforming themselves while incarcerated and going on to become proponents of preventing youth criminality. Thus, there is hardly any reason for individuals not to endeavour to make their lives better.
In sum, I feel that people should always try to better their positions in life, no matter how dim the future may be. To simply give up and accept things as they are is worse than failure.
