  Environmental problems plague our life everyday with some saying that the loss and/or extinction of many plant or animal species is far more important than any other planetary concern Others, needless to say, disagree. The following essay will describe both sides of this argument as well as giving my own views on the matter, namely that i agree with the statement given.

  Firstly, when those of us that believe the reduction of vegetation and animal life is of paramount importance see the balance of the food chain being affected so drastically,we can understand why the entire eco-system is in such danger. Without the support structure of the level below everything will collapse with astonishing rapidity. An example of this would be where a plant would give an insect sustenance, which would then feed a bird, which would then be eaten by a larger mammal that would then be killed by a human for food. If the insect dies, so does the bird,and on up the chain to the top.

  Moving over to the other side of the argument and those that say things like global warming is more important than the life system on our planet, I can understand their point of view even if it is erroneous. Global warming is affecting our planet in a very negative way and it is, without a shadow of a doubt, of great importance. However, if there is no life on the planet to potentially alter this condition, and here I'm thinking of the absorption of COz by plant life, it wouldn't matter about global warming as there would be no-one to actually experience it.

  In my opinion, without the pillars of support that the food chain provides, not to mention the future that ensures, nothing else matters.

  Human interference in the natural world has reached a point where no one can agree on which problems need addressing first. Some people argue that preventing the loss of particular species of flora and fauna is the most pressing issue, but others feel that more urgent environmental issues must be tackled first.

  On the one hand, the biodiversity of life on our planet is vital to humanity's continued exis tence. The various ecosystems in their respective biomes are natural sources of food and resource For example, honey bees are the primary pollinators of all plants which humans eat Other animals and plants comprise irreplaceable links in food chains. Therefore, it is understandable that some people would argue that protecting plant and animal species takes the highest position of impor-tance in regard to coping with environmental problems.

  On the other hand, as noble as protecting plants and animals sounds on paper, it neglects to address the root cause of environmental destruction. Industrial pollution and deforestation, just to name two, have ravaged ecosystems around the globe. Saving animal and plant species is impossible if their habitats are annihilated. Furthermore, such issues have more direct effects on human life. Industrial pollution is known to cause numerous cancers and birth defects, and deforestation is a major contributor to climate change and soil erosion that can affect where people are able to live. For these reasons, I believe that there are other environmental issues which should be resolved before we attempt to save specific plant and animal species.

  To conclude, while there is undoubtedly merit in preserving certain plant and animal species,I do not believe that doing so is the most important environmental activity. It is my opinion that the environment would be far better preserved if human destruction, such as pollution and deforestation,was addressed first, as it would preclude the need to save animal and plant species.
