  In recent years, what education should serve for has become a controversial topic. Some people assert that education should make individuals valuable and beneficial to the society, while others argue that education should act as a bridge between individuals and their ambitions. This essay aims to discuss both purposes as well as to provide several reasons.

  On one hand, considering that education could equip individuals with professional knowledge and practical skills, well-educated individuals are supposed to be the main force in the development of society. Without their support, the nation may find it difficult to survive in the competitive world. Moreover, for the majority of countries in the world, a large proportion of education system is funded by governments; thus it is understandable that the nation would expect individuals who benefit from the system to contribute to the society in return. Based on these arguments, some people would believe that the purpose of education should be preparing valuable members for the society.

  On the other hand, there is no denying that individuals could fulfill their ambitions and realise their dreams through education in this competitive world, as education could increase a person’s marketable skills and attractiveness to potential employers. In addition to that, self achievement is of great importance for the development of individuals, and only if people have the chance to reach their personal goals can they be fully motivated. Therefore, if the purpose of education does not comply with the ambitions of individuals, they might find it hard to carry on putting sufficient effort into this painstaking education process.

  Taking all above into account, I believe these two opinions are not paradoxical and education should fulfill dual tasks, one of which is to cultivate valuable citizens for society and the other one is to fulfill individual’s own ambition.
